It all started Saturday, April 21st. The alarm went off at 5:45am. I know what you're thinking, 5:45am!!!! Well, ordinarily, it would just be cruel and unusual punishment but this weekend was different. We were getting up super early to help members of our local community here in Port Chester get what they need from one of our local food pantries at Caritas of Port Chester, located in St. Peter's Church. Every Wednesday and Saturday, Caritas of Port Chester organizes a food pantry that caters to families in the local area that need to provide sustenance for themselves and their families. It was by far the most well organized food pantry with an easy system to follow and not only was it set up for shoppers to choose what they want (this system is called a "Choice Pantry"), they were each assigned their very own personal shopper! All this for free! It was a wonderful morning filled with smiles, new relationships and the promise of hope.
Later on, we ventured out to support a friend of ours whose mission it is to provide healthy and sustainable living options to his community through community gardens. The original garden resides at Weber Drive in downtown Port Chester, but two new ones have emerged! Located on Drew Avenue and Terrace Avenue. It was the ribbon cutting ceremony and we were so glad we were there to support a great endeavor such as this.
No, we were not done with our travels yet!
The next day, Sunday, 4/22, we, along with two of our friends, made our way to Five Islands Park in New Rochelle to help clean it up and what better day to do this but on Earth Day! It was a beautiful day with warm temps and crystal clear blue skies. We managed to clean up a lot of garbage from the park which shows that no effort is too small.
Check out our pics from the weekend and stay tuned for more Gives coming up!
